Leisure tips

Places of interest

There are many ways to discover Schleswig-Holstein. Perhaps you'd like to follow in the footsteps of one of its famous sons or daughters - visiting historical landmarks along the way. It could just as well be that the past is of little interest and you prefer to indulge in a little modern culture. Because getting out and about is often even more fun in a group, we've integrated a number of excursions, museum visits and other social activities into our comprehensive year-round guest program.

Travemuende Baltic sea-side town

Travemuende is one of Europe's most beautiful sea-side towns. Long beach walks and a visit to a quaint fishing harbour, where fresh fish are on sale, offer maritime pleasures all year round. A shopping excursion along the sea front, past the cruise ships docked at the Ostpreussenkai and a visit to a street café to view the ships in the Trave estuary are good for relaxation.

The Hanseatic city of Luebeck – a world cultural heritage site and the gate to the Baltic

Luebeck is unique! The entire city was therefore declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1987. The city centre is surrounded by water and has approximately 1800 listed buildings lining historical lanes and winding alleyways. Not only is it beautiful to look at, it also forms the core of a very lively city with about 214,000 residents. Formerly an independent free Hanseatic city, Luebeck is now the largest city in Schleswig-Holstein and is known as the "cultural capital of the north".

Alter Leuchtturm (Old Lighthouse) Travemünde

Alter Leuchtturm Travemünde

The Old Lighthouse is more than just a name, it is in fact the nation's oldest lighthouse - official documents confirming it was there as long ago as 1330! The Old Lighthouse Travemünde is 31 metres tall and now houses a maritime museum spread over 8 floors that among other things, teaches visitors all about the history of illuminated shore navigation. Displays include model fire boats, various lanterns and the illumination systems from other lighthouses. There are also numerous photos of lighthouses with explanations hung on the walls. Reaching the top takes 142 steps and once there, the lighthouse's fully functioning warning system with its 1000 W bulb can be inspected. Those less interested in the technology will find the 360° outside walkway worth the climb. It's a great place to enjoy views of the pier, Travemünde's old town, as well as over the Bay of Lübeck up to Grömitz and over Mecklenburg Vorpommern's coastline.

Climbing forest Travemünde

Kletterwald Travemünde

The “Kletterwald Travemünde” (Travemünde climbing forest) is an exciting outdoor adventure park in Travemuende (not far from the hotel), which is located in the middle of a beautiful wooded area. Here you can test and improve your dexterity, strength and stamina on challenging climbing courses. The Travemünde climbing forest has several climbing courses of varying degrees of difficulty. These are divided into different heights and challenges so that both beginners and experienced climbers get their money's worth. The courses consist of platforms connected by ropes, bridges, nets and other obstacles.

Four-masted steel barque "Passat"

Historic sailing ship Passat in daylight near Maritim Hotel Travemünde

The 115 m long four-masted was completed by Blohm & Voß in Hamburg for the Ferdinand Laeisz shipping company. The ship was launched in 1911 and complemented an existing fleet of similar ships renowned as the Flying-P-Liners. 'Passat' is German for trade wind and during her time at sea, the ship sailed around Cape Horn no less than 39 times and circumnavigated the globe in both 1932 and 1948. The graceful sailing ship has been docked in Travemünde since 1960 and has grown into the borough's most renowned landmark.

The Holsten Gate

Holstentor in Lübeck with blooming flowers in the foreground and blue sky.

The Holsten Gate is one of Luebeck's best known attractions. On a visit to the City of Seven Spires, you cannot fail to wonder at this landmark at the entrance to the Old Town.

Next to the Brandenburg Gate, Cologne Cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche church in Munich, it is the world's best known German building. It's thanks to the success of Luebeck's merchants that the city enjoyed so much eminence in the Middle Ages. And the Holsten Gate is the proud symbol of Luebeck's status as a free city-state. The city gate was built between 1464 and 1478 and was modelled on Dutch architecture. It acted both as defence and as a status symbol. The words CONCORDIA DOMI FORIS PAX (harmony within, peace without) are inscribed in unmissable gold lettering above the gate of the twin tower with its rounded arch.

Almost all visitors stop short to wonder at the marked tilt and sagging of the south tower. But people in the 15th century didn't have as much experience of foundation work as they do today! Since the towers stand isolated on a type of grate and the heavy central wing rests directly on them, the towers sank unevenly into the marshy ground. In 1863, the Gate was a sorry sight. Following a vote with a majority of just one, local residents decided to keep the Gate and extensive renovation work began. The sinking process was only brought to a halt 70 years later. The last renovations took place between 2004 and 2006. Here, the slate roofs, terracotta frieze and parts of the brickwork were replaced.

We also heartily recommend a look inside the monument, where you can find out all about the "Power of Trade" at the Holsten Gate Museum. Historic model ships, suits of armour, weapons, legal instruments and articles of merchandise provide a glimpse into the era of the Hanseatic League.

Two majestic lions have pride of place in front of the Holsten Gate and keep watch over the city.
