Hermanns Memorial

As a reminder of a slaughter in the Teutoburger Wald in the year 9 AD, Ernst Bandel built this tower in the middle of the 19th century. Since it was dedicated in 1875 the Hermannsdenkmal has been one of the most important picnic destinations in north-west Germany. Every year, more than a million people visit the almost 55 m tall monument located on the 386 m high Grotenburg, which affords a breathtaking view of the beautiful Lipperland.
